Home visits exist for the situation where getting to a clinic is the actual obstacle.
For anyone who finds clinic trips difficult or tiring, or for whom a trip across the city takes the whole day.
When stairs, transport or pain make getting out a real challenge, the doctor comes to you instead.
Follow-up after a hospital stay, surgery or an urgent care visit, when nobody has checked in since.
A home visit is a normal medical appointment that happens in the patient’s home instead of a clinic. The physician can assess non-emergency concerns, review how current treatment is working, order lab work or imaging, and refer on to a specialist when that is the right next step.
For older adults, some of the most useful visits are the unhurried ones:

The home tells a physician things no clinic appointment shows. The stairs, the lighting, the rugs, what is in the fridge and how many pill bottles are on the counter all tell a story. A patient who is comfortable in their own chair also tends to describe what is going on more fully than one who is tired from the trip.
Yes. Family members arrange most of the visits we book. Call 204-586-6655 with your parent’s Manitoba Health card number and their full address, and tell us what is going on. We confirm coverage and the area, then set a time. The physician will confirm your parent agrees to the visit when they arrive.
If your parent is able to make their own decisions, the physician will speak with them directly and will need their agreement before sharing details with you. Our guide to arranging home care for an aging parent covers preparation, consent and what to ask before the doctor leaves.
Home visits cover select Winnipeg neighbourhoods and are area specific. Check your postal code or call to confirm. If your parent lives outside the area, a phone or video visit is available anywhere in Manitoba. Read virtual visit or home visit, and how to choose.

A doctor’s home visit is medical care. It is not daily help with bathing, meals or medication reminders, which is home care and is arranged separately. It is also not emergency care.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke such as face drooping or sudden weakness or trouble speaking, a severe allergic reaction, or a serious injury.
